Class styles & levels

Strong days, slow days and everything between

Seven kinds of class, each marked gentle, steady or strong. If you’re not sure, start gentle: you can always do more next time.

SteadyStrong

Vinyasa flow

Movement linked to breath, flowing from one posture to the next.

Expect sun salutations, standing balances, a little core work and a long, well-earned rest at the end. Classes marked strong add arm balances and a quicker pace; steady classes keep things grounded.

Good if

  • You like to move and warm up properly
  • You want strength and stamina as well as stretch
  • You’ve done a few classes before

Hatha

Classic postures held for a few breaths, with clear cues and plenty of options.

Hatha slows things down enough to learn how each posture works for your body. Morwenna teaches with blocks and straps close by and a short breathing practice at the start and end of every class.

Good if

  • You want to learn the foundations properly
  • You prefer a steady pace to a flowing one
  • You’re coming back after a break
Length:
60 or 75 minutes

Gentle

Slow flow

The same flowing shapes as vinyasa at half the pace.

Kerensa leaves time to notice how things feel and to come out of a posture before you’re tired. The 45-minute lunchtime classes are easy to fit around work, and nobody minds if you arrive in office clothes and change.

Good if

  • You’re new, or newly back
  • You want to move without rushing
  • You only have a lunch hour

45 or 60 minutes

Gentle

Yin

Long, quiet holds of three to five minutes, mostly seated or lying down.

It sounds easy and is quietly challenging: staying still is a skill. Yin runs in the evenings in the low-lit Garden room, with blankets for everyone. Bring warm socks.

Good if

  • You sit at a desk all day
  • You run, cycle or surf and feel stiff
  • You want a slower end to the day
Length:
75 minutes

Morwenna and Anouk
Gentle

Restorative

Every shape fully supported on bolsters, blocks and blankets.

Four or five postures in a class, each held for several minutes so you can let go completely. There’s no flow and no effort to speak of, just a calm room and Anouk’s quiet voice.

Good if

  • You’ve had a hard week
  • You want rest more than a workout
  • You’re easing back after illness, with your GP’s go-ahead

60 or 75 minutes

Pregnancy yoga

Gentle movement, breathing and rest for any stage of pregnancy, once you feel ready.

Classes are adapted week to week around whoever is in the room, with plenty of time to chat over tea. Please check with your midwife or GP before you start, and tell Anouk how many weeks you are and how you’re feeling when you arrive.

Good if

  • You’re pregnant and want to keep moving
  • You’d like to meet other parents-to-be locally
  • No yoga experience is needed

75 minutes

Beginners’ foundations

A rolling course that teaches one family of postures each week.

Standing postures, forward folds, twists, gentle backbends, balances and rest, taught slowly with time for questions. Join any week: after six weeks you’ll have met them all and can go to any gentle or steady class.

Good if

  • You’ve never done yoga
  • You’d like to understand the “why” as well as the “how”
  • You prefer a smaller, friendly group

75 minutes

Level guide

How hard is it, really?

The dots on the timetable tell you how much a class asks of you. They’re about pace and effort, not flexibility: nobody needs to touch their toes.

All levels

All levels

Taught so a complete beginner and a ten-year regular can share the room. Options are offered for every posture.

Gentle

Gentle

Slow pace, lots of support, mostly on the floor. The best place to start, or to come back after time off.

Steady

Steady

A moderate flow with standing work and some strength. Comfortable once you know the basic postures.

Strong

Strong

Quicker, warmer and more demanding, with arm balances and inversions offered. For regular practitioners.
