Beginners’ guide

Your first class, without the nerves

Everyone starts somewhere, and most of our regulars started here, a little unsure which way round the mat goes. Here’s what to expect.

Five small steps

  1. 1

    Pick a gentle class

Beginners’ foundations, slow flow or anything marked gentle or all levels.

  2. 2

    Reserve a mat

Book online and choose a spot. Near the back is fine for watching others.

  3. 3

    Arrive ten minutes early

Time to change, fill your water and tell the teacher about any injuries.

  4. 4

    Go at your own pace

Rest whenever you want. Doing less is always allowed.

  5. 5

    Stay for tea

Ask the teacher anything afterwards. There are no silly questions.

What to bring

  • Comfortable clothes you can stretch in
  • A water bottle (we have a refill tap)
  • Socks and a jumper for the rest at the end
  • That’s it: mats and props are provided

A word on health

Our classes are general movement, breathing and relaxation. They aren’t a substitute for medical care, and our teachers can’t diagnose or treat anything. If you’re pregnant, recovering from injury or surgery, or living with a health condition, please talk to your GP, midwife or physiotherapist before you start, and let your teacher know before class.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Showing all 15 questions.

Before you come

I’m not flexible. Can I still do yoga?

Yes. Flexibility is something yoga can help with, not something you need first. Every posture has options, and nobody is looking at how far you can reach.

What should I wear?

Anything comfortable you can move and bend in: leggings or joggers and a T-shirt are perfect. We practise barefoot. Bring a warm layer and socks for yin and restorative.

Do I need to bring a mat?

No. We have good-quality mats, blocks, straps, bolsters and blankets for everyone, cleaned after every class. You’re welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer.

Should I eat before class?

Most people feel better with an empty-ish stomach, so try to leave two hours after a big meal or one hour after a snack. Bring water.

I have an injury or health condition. Is yoga safe for me?

Yoga is general exercise, not treatment, and we can’t give medical advice. Please talk to your GP or physiotherapist before you start, and tell your teacher before class so they can suggest options. Gentle and restorative classes are usually the best place to begin.

In the studio

What happens in my first class?

Arrive ten minutes early and say hello at the desk. We’ll show you where to leave your things, set you up with props and introduce you to the teacher. Class starts with a few minutes of settling and ends with a long rest called savasana.

Can I leave early or skip a posture?

Of course. Rest in child’s pose whenever you like. If you need to leave early, take a mat near the door and let your teacher know beforehand so you can slip out quietly.

Is there anywhere to change and store things?

Yes: two changing rooms, cubbies for bags and shoes, and a shower. Leave valuables at home if you can.

Is the studio accessible?

The Loft studio is up one flight of stairs. The Garden room is on the ground floor with step-free access from Pendennis Mews and an accessible toilet. Tell us what you need and we’ll make it work.

Booking and passes

How far ahead can I book?

Up to seven days. Bookings open at the same time each day, so next Monday’s 07:00 class opens this Monday at 07:00.

How do I cancel?

Open “My bookings” at the top of any page and choose Cancel. Cancel at least two hours before to keep your class credit.

What if a class is full?

Join the waiting list at the desk or by phone. Mats often free up on the day, especially for early-morning classes.

Can I bring a friend?

Unlimited members can bring a friend free once a month. Anyone else can book a drop-in or start the intro offer.

Pregnancy and special circumstances

Can I come to regular classes while pregnant?

Our pregnancy yoga classes are designed for you, and most people prefer them. If you’d like to come to other classes too, check with your midwife or GP first and tell the teacher how many weeks you are.

When can I return after having a baby?

Wait until you’ve had your postnatal check and your GP or midwife is happy for you to exercise. Restorative and gentle classes are a kind way back in.
