Simple first steps for common problems

General tips to keep you comfortable until you see a dentist. They don’t replace an examination.

  • Knocked-out adult tooth

    • Pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root.

    • Rinse it briefly in milk or water. Don’t scrub it.

    • If you can, gently push it back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk.

    • Call us straight away: the sooner, the better.

  • Chipped or broken tooth

    • Rinse your mouth with warm water.

    • Keep any pieces and bring them with you.

    • A cold compress on the cheek can help with swelling.

    • Avoid chewing on that side until you’re seen.

  • Toothache

    • Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food.

    • Over-the-counter pain relief may help, if it’s safe for you. Follow the label.

    • Don’t put aspirin or pain-relief gel directly on the gum.

    • Book a visit if it lasts more than a day or two.

  • Lost filling or crown

    • Keep the crown somewhere safe and bring it in.

    • Avoid very hot, cold or sticky food on that side.

    • Don’t glue a crown back yourself.

    • Book a visit in the next few days, sooner if it hurts.

  • Swelling

    • Call us the same day for any swelling in the gum or face.

    • A cold compress on the outside of the cheek may ease it.

    • Call 911 if swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing.

  • Brace wire or aligner problem

    • Cover a poking wire with orthodontic wax or a small piece of sugar-free gum.

    • Lost or cracked aligner: wear your previous set and call us.

    • Never cut a wire yourself if it’s near your throat; call us.
