What is that late invoice costing you?

Under the EU late payment rules, a business paid late by another business can usually claim interest and a fixed compensation fee. Put in your numbers to see roughly how much.

Late-payment interest

For business-to-business invoices. Amounts in euro.

Between €1 and €1,000,000.

45 days

Counted from the due date on the invoice.

The statutory rate is this plus 8 percentage points. Check the rate for the half-year your invoice fell due.

You could claim about

€100.03

Compensation
€70
Interest plus compensation over the first 90 days
Your claim grows from €70.00 on the due date to €130.07 by day 90. At 45 days it is €100.03.

How this is worked out. Interest = amount × (reference rate + 8%) × days late ÷ 365. Fixed compensation is €40 for invoices under €1,000, €70 from €1,000 to under €10,000, and €100 from €10,000.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Contract terms, public-sector rules and consumer sales can change what applies, so check with your accountant or solicitor before you claim.
