Clemency Thorne grew up above a pub on Romney Marsh in Kent and spent eleven years as a court reporter in Maidstone before turning to fiction. Her first novel, The Drowned Church, introduced Detective Sergeant Esme Lark and won the Sandpiper Award for best debut.
Three more Esme Lark mysteries have followed: Salt and Shingle, Low Tide at Dungeness and The Glass Marsh. She has also written two standalone novels: The Cartographer’s Widow, shortlisted for the Harrowell Prize, and the bestselling Every Bell in Canterbury.
Her books are published by Finch & Holloway and translated into fourteen languages, and the screen rights to the Esme Lark series have been optioned. She lives in Canterbury and swims at Whitstable all year round.
