Why a cargo e-bike

Most car trips are short. Most of them carry something.

School, groceries, the library, the hardware store, work. A Portage carries what a car carries on those trips, parks in a third of a parking space and costs a few cents a day to charge.

We asked our first hundred owners what changed. These are their numbers, not ours.

Built for here

Engineered on a 600-foot hill

Duluth climbs from the lake to the ridge in a few blocks, and it snows from November to April. If it works here, it works where you live.

  • 85 Nm mid-drive

The motor drives the cranks, not the hub, so it uses the gears like you do. In Sport with 300 lb aboard, it takes the Mesaba Avenue climb at a steady 11 mph.

Class 1 · pedal assist to 20 mph

  • A battery that keeps itself warm

Below 20°F a heated sleeve holds the cells at about 40°F, and it won’t charge them until they are above freezing.

  • Belt drive, stepless hub

No chain to rust in road salt, no derailleur to freeze. The internal hub shifts while you’re stopped at a light.

  • Four-piston brakes

203 mm rotors front and rear. They never faded on forty winter descents with a full load.

  • Fits in an elevator

74 inches long, the length of a regular bike. It stands on its tail to take up a square foot and a half of hallway.

All questions
Is the deposit really refundable?

Yes. The $150 deposit holds your spot in a batch and is refunded in full if you cancel at any time before your bike ships. We hold deposits separately from our operating money.

When will my Portage ship?

A new batch of 120 bikes ships every two months. You join the batch that is open when you reserve, about three months out. Your reservation shows the estimated ship month.

Can I ride it in snow and ice?

That is what it was built for. With the studded tire option it handles packed snow and ice; the battery heater, sealed connectors and belt drive take care of the rest.

Can I try one first?

Come to the shop on Raleigh Street, Tuesday to Saturday. Test rides take about 30 minutes, and you can bring your kid and your helmet.
