Studio

A studio of five, on purpose.

Noemi Imhof and Matteo Sutter started Raster in 2015, after ten years between them at larger agencies in Zürich and Amsterdam. They wanted a studio where the people who pitch the work are the people who do it.

We have stayed small deliberately. Five people can sit at one table, argue about a kerning pair and still get the sign schedule out on Friday.

What we hold to

  1. i.

    Fewer, better things

We take on around twelve projects a year so each one gets our full attention, not our leftover time.

  2. ii.

    Systems over one-offs

A good identity should make the hundredth poster easier than the first. We design the rules, not just the examples.

  3. iii.

    Plain words

In proposals, in presentations and in the work itself. If we can’t explain a decision simply, it’s probably the wrong one.

  4. iv.

    Leave it running

Templates, documentation and training are part of every project, so your team can carry on without us.

03

How a project runs

A typical identity and website project, about 16 weeks from kick-off to launch. Bars show each phase’s share of the time.

  1. 01

    Listen

Interviews, a site visit, an audit of everything you already have. We finish with a one-page brief we both sign.

    2 weeks
  2. 02

    Define

Strategy, structure and two or three clearly different directions, presented in person, never by email.

    3 weeks
  3. 03

    Design

One direction, developed into a full system and tested on your real material: real timetables, real screens, real signs.

    6 weeks
  4. 04

    Build

Code, artwork, templates and fabrication drawings, with the guidelines written alongside rather than after.

    5 weeks
  5. 05

    Look after

Training for your team at launch and a free review six months later, to fix what real use has shown us.
