Questions
Good questions, straight answers.
What learners and their parents ask us most, from getting a provisional licence to what happens on test day.
Getting started
How old do I have to be to start lessons?
You can apply for a provisional licence from 15 years and 9 months, and drive a car on the road from your 17th birthday. Lots of our pupils book their first lesson for the day itself.
What do I need before my first lesson?
Your provisional licence photocard, comfortable flat shoes and glasses or contact lenses if you need them to read a number plate 20 metres away. Your instructor checks your eyesight at the start of the first lesson.
Should I learn in a manual or an automatic?
A manual pass lets you drive both. An automatic pass only covers automatics, but most new cars are automatic now and many pupils need fewer hours. If you’re unsure, book a manual first lesson and decide with your instructor.
I’ve had lessons elsewhere. Can I carry on with you?
Yes. Your first lesson is an assessment drive, and your instructor will pick up where you left off rather than starting again.
Can I choose a male or female instructor?
Of course. Choose anyone on the instructors page, or tell the office what you’d prefer and we’ll match you.
Lessons
How many lessons will I need?
It varies a lot. Our pupils pass after 38 hours on average, and many add private practice with family. Your instructor gives you an honest estimate after your first lesson and updates it as you go.
Where do lessons start and finish?
Anywhere in LN1 to LN6: home, school, college or work, and it can be different each time. Check your postcode on the areas page.
Are 2-hour lessons better than 1-hour?
For most learners, yes: you spend less of the lesson warming up and get further from home. One-hour lessons work well for a quick refresher or practising one manoeuvre.
Can I have lessons in the evening or on Saturdays?
Lessons run from 7am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Harpreet teaches evenings and four of our instructors work Saturdays. We don’t teach on Sundays or bank holidays.
Can I practise with my parents as well?
Yes, and it helps. The supervising driver must be over 21, have held a full licence for three years and you need L plates and learner insurance on their car. Ask your instructor what to practise between lessons.
Tests
When should I book my theory test?
Once you’ve had a few lessons and done some revision. You need a theory pass before you can book the practical test, and it lasts two years. Try our practice quiz to see where you are.
Who books the practical test?
You can, on GOV.UK, or the office can do it with you so the date fits your instructor’s diary. Please don’t book it until your instructor agrees you’re close to ready.
Can I use the school car for my test?
Yes. It’s £80 for the car, a one-hour warm-up lesson just before and your instructor waiting at the test centre. On intensive courses it’s included.
What happens if I don’t pass?
It happens to lots of good drivers. Your instructor goes through the examiner’s report with you, you’ll work on the faults, and you can rebook. You have to wait at least 10 working days for another test.
Can my instructor sit in on the test?
If you’d like them to, yes. They sit in the back and don’t say anything, but it helps them see exactly what happened if you need a second go.
Paying and cancelling
How do I pay?
Pay as you go at the end of each lesson by card or bank transfer. Blocks and intensive courses are paid up front or in two halves.
What if I need to cancel a lesson?
Cancel or move any lesson for free up to 48 hours before. With less notice we charge the full lesson, unless your instructor can fill the time. Illness with a note is always free.
Do block booking hours expire?
No. Use them over as many weeks as you need. If you stop learning, unused hours are refunded at the block rate.
Is there a discount for students?
Full-time students get 5% off blocks of 10 hours or more and intensive courses. Show your student card at your first lesson. See the price calculator.
Can I buy lessons as a gift?
Yes. Gift vouchers for 2, 5 or 10 hours never expire. Call the office or send us a message.
