about me
Hello! I’m Marnie, and I draw every day
I spent eight years as a graphic designer in London, drawing only in meeting notes. In 2017 I moved home to Margate, bought an iPad “for work” and started drawing my breakfast every morning.
People asked how. So I showed them, first in a few short videos, then in the Sunday Sketch, then in a proper course. Today I teach full time from a tiny studio above a chip shop, with a view of the sea if I lean.
I believe anyone can learn to draw. It isn’t a gift you’re born with; it’s a handful of skills you can practise, one wobbly line at a time.
How we got here
- 2017
Back to Margate, a secondhand iPad and one breakfast drawing a day.
- 2020
The first Sunday Sketch goes out to 212 people, mostly my mum’s friends.
- 2021
Draw Anything on iPad launches. The first student draws a very good dog.
- 2023
Live Saturday workshops start, with a kettle on in every kitchen.
- 2025
Thirty thousand students and a studio above the chip shop.
- 2026
Seven courses, 41,000 students and a new animation course.
Things I believe about learning to draw
Shapes before details
Every drawing is a few circles, boxes and blobs wearing a costume. Get those right and the rest follows.
Little and often
Ten minutes a day beats a whole Sunday once a month. That’s why my lessons are short.
Wobbly is charming
Nobody wants a drawing that looks like a photo. Your wobble is your style, so keep it.
What’s in my bag
The kit I use for every course and workshop. You don’t need any of it to start, but people always ask.
- iPad Air with a matte screen protector for that paper feel
- A stylus with a soft rubber grip, because hands get tired
- Procreate for nearly everything, Fresco for watercolour days
- A paper sketchbook and a black fineliner for the beach
- A very large mug that appears in roughly half my drawings
- Headphones and a podcast about something else entirely
Shall we draw something?
