Our team

Small team, big hearts, lots of dog hair

Three vets, two licensed veterinary technicians and a client care lead. You’ll see the same faces visit after visit, and so will your pet.

Veterinarians

  • Illustrated portrait of Dr. Lucinda Arceneaux

    Dr. Lucinda Arceneaux, DVM

    Founder & medical director

Lucinda opened Sweetgum in 2014 after a decade in busy city hospitals, wanting visits long enough to actually talk. She has a soft spot for anxious dogs and old cats, and shares her home with Pippin, a corgi with strong opinions about mail carriers.

    Surgery & dentistry

Everett leads our surgery and dental days. He explains every procedure with a quick sketch on the exam-room whiteboard, and he’ll call you himself when your pet wakes up. Outside work he fixes up old bicycles.

    Rabbits & exotic pets

Amaru has kept rabbits since she was six and did extra training in exotic animal medicine. She sees our rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats and reptiles in a quiet room away from the dogs.

Technicians & client care

Licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs) are the vet nurses of the US: they handle anesthesia, dental X-rays, lab work and a lot of reassuring cuddles.

  • Illustrated portrait of Quentin Galloway

    Quentin Galloway, LVT

    Lead veterinary technician

Quentin monitors every anesthetic and runs our Saturday puppy socials. Ask him about nail trims: he has a trick involving peanut butter.

  • Illustrated portrait of Dolores Bettencourt

    Dolores Bettencourt, LVT

    Dental & surgical technician

Dolores takes the dental X-rays and sits with pets as they wake up. Twenty-two years in practice and still knits recovery blankets.

  • Illustrated portrait of Keiko Haverford

    Keiko Haverford

    Client care lead

Keiko answers the phone, sorts records transfers and knows most of our patients by the sound of their bark.

Ziggy

Head of reception (self-appointed)

Ziggy arrived as a stray kitten in 2019 and never left. He supervises the front desk from the windowsill and is not allowed in exam rooms, which he finds deeply unfair. Allergic or nervous about cats? Tell us and he’ll go to his office.

How we work

  • Unhurried visits

Check-ups are 30 minutes, senior visits an hour. Time to examine properly and answer every question.

  • Estimates first

You get a written estimate before tests or treatment, and we call before going over it.

  • Low-stress handling

Treats, non-slip mats, cat-only hours and pheromone diffusers. No pinning, no rushing.
