Questions

12 questions

How does the reservation work?

You build your Portage, pay a $150 deposit and get a spot in the batch that is open. About six weeks before that batch ships, we confirm your build, your delivery date and the balance. You can change your build until then.

Is the deposit refundable?

Yes, in full, at any time before your bike ships. Cancel from the reserve page or call us. Refunds go back to the card you paid with within five working days.

What is a batch?

We build in batches of 120 bikes, and a new batch ships every two months. Each batch takes reservations for about two months and closes when it is full or when the next one opens.

Can I ride a Portage in winter?

Yes. With studded tires it handles packed snow and ice. The battery heater keeps the cells warm below 20°F, the belt drive doesn’t mind salt, and the connectors are sealed. Rinse it with fresh water after salty rides.

How far does it go on a charge?

30 to 55 miles on the standard battery and 45 to 80 on the dual battery, depending on load, hills, temperature and assist level. The range estimator works it out for your rides.

How do I charge it?

Plug the charger into the bike, or take the battery out and charge it indoors. Below freezing, the bike waits until the cells are warm enough before charging starts.

How many kids can it carry?

One in the kid seat, for kids about 2 to 6, or two older kids on the deck with the rear rack and running boards. Rider and cargo together can weigh up to 400 lb.

Do I need a license or insurance?

The Portage is a Class 1 e-bike, so in most states it is treated like a regular bicycle: no license or registration. Check your local rules, and ask your home insurer about adding it to your policy.

Where do I get it serviced?

At our shop in Duluth, or at any bike shop: the parts are standard, and we send service guides to shops on request. The first 300-mile checkup is free.

Can I test ride one?

Come to 5124 Raleigh Street, Tuesday to Saturday. Rides take about 30 minutes. Bring a helmet, and your kid if you want to try the kid seat.

Can I change my build after I reserve?

Yes, until we confirm your build about six weeks before your batch ships. Colors, batteries and accessories can all change; the deposit stays the same.

Do you ship outside the US?

Not yet. We deliver across the contiguous US today. Canada is next on our list, starting with Ontario and Manitoba.
