While you wait
Simple first steps for common problems
General tips to keep you comfortable until you see a dentist. They don’t replace an examination.
-
Knocked-out adult tooth
- Pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root.
- Rinse it briefly in milk or water. Don’t scrub it.
- If you can, gently push it back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk.
- Call us straight away: the sooner, the better.
-
Chipped or broken tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Keep any pieces and bring them with you.
- A cold compress on the cheek can help with swelling.
- Avoid chewing on that side until you’re seen.
-
Toothache
- Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food.
- Over-the-counter pain relief may help, if it’s safe for you. Follow the label.
- Don’t put aspirin or pain-relief gel directly on the gum.
- Book a visit if it lasts more than a day or two.
-
Lost filling or crown
- Keep the crown somewhere safe and bring it in.
- Avoid very hot, cold or sticky food on that side.
- Don’t glue a crown back yourself.
- Book a visit in the next few days, sooner if it hurts.
-
Swelling
- Call us the same day for any swelling in the gum or face.
- A cold compress on the outside of the cheek may ease it.
- Call 911 if swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing.
-
Brace wire or aligner problem
- Cover a poking wire with orthodontic wax or a small piece of sugar-free gum.
- Lost or cracked aligner: wear your previous set and call us.
- Never cut a wire yourself if it’s near your throat; call us.
